The Skills for Life Project
Improv training is more than just a way to have fun and learn new skills, it can be a life-changing experience. This is why Stevie Ray’s Improv Company created the Skills for Life Project, where we partner with local social service organizations to bring our training to those who need it most. For over 35 years, the self-confidence, teamwork, and communication skills we teach have helped thousands to lead happier, more successful lives. We do this with one-time workshops as well as long-term courses; either at the client’s location or at our facility at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.
Youth Development ♦ Mental Health ♦ Domestic Abuse Recovery ♦ Older Adults ♦ Formerly Incarcerated ♦ Addiction Recovery ♦ Military Veterans
Improv training works hand-in-hand with the efforts of professionals helping these individuals to resolve difficult issues and build better lives. Improv is unique because, as opposed to other forms of training, it enables students to express their own ideas, using their words, in an environment that is challenging, but safe and supportive. Improv training is highly customizable, which allows us to adjust the specific needs of each group. Participants learn to trust themselves—and others—and to communicate effectively to manage conflict and anxiety, advocate for their own needs, and work well with others.
I have struggled with depression all my life. The classes at Stevie Ray’s became a lifeline for me. They are more therapeutic than any therapy I have ever had. It has transformed my life. Kathleen Z.
My son is on the autism spectrum and school stresses him out. He is very smart, but not comfortable in social situations. But after every improv class he came home relaxed and happy; and every week and little more confident. Thanks! Terry J.
I find myself focusing less on the past or worrying about the future; I keep my mind on the present. As a result, I am calmer and more able to enjoy myself and where I am. My classes with Stevie Ray’s were welcoming, affirming, and challenging all at the same time. Fred S.
